Online vs. warehouse: two separate price-adjustment tracks
Updated
Quick answer: Costco treats the warehouse and Costco.com as two separate stores. A price adjustment compares your price only against the channel where you bought: warehouse purchases against that warehouse's current price, Costco.com orders against Costco.com's current price. A lower price in the other channel does not qualify.
Where you bought decides everything
This is the single most common reason a Costco price adjustment request goes nowhere, and it is not really a denial — it is a routing rule:
- Bought in the warehouse, price dropped in the warehouse: claim at the service counter. You are on the warehouse track.
- Bought on Costco.com, price dropped on Costco.com: claim through the online price adjustment form. You are on the online track.
- Bought in the warehouse, cheaper on Costco.com (or the reverse): no adjustment. The channels do not compare against each other.
The 30-day window and the same-item rule apply on both tracks — the basics are covered in how a Costco price adjustment works.
Why the same item has two prices at all
Costco.com prices usually include shipping and handling in the sticker, so an item often costs a few dollars more online than on the warehouse floor. The reverse happens too: online-only promotions can undercut the warehouse. Either way, Costco prices the two channels independently, and the adjustment rules follow the pricing, not the logo.
How to claim on each track
| Warehouse track | Online track | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Service counter at the warehouse | Costco.com → Customer Service → Request a Price Adjustment |
| Proof | Membership card; receipt or app helps | Your Costco.com order history |
| Refund | Usually on the spot, to your original payment | Credited to the payment method on the order, typically within a few business days |
The gray areas
- Same product, different item numbers. Online bundles sometimes carry a different item number than the warehouse version. Different item number means different item — the adjustment can be refused on that alone.
- Big-ticket deliveries. Appliances and furniture ordered online but delivered locally still ride the online track in most reports — go through the form first rather than the warehouse counter.
- When in doubt, ask. The ask is free on both tracks, and the worst answer is no.
Frequently asked questions
Will the warehouse match a lower Costco.com price?
As policy, no — price adjustments compare against the channel where you bought. Individual managers have discretion and members occasionally report exceptions, but do not plan on one.
Can I get a Costco.com price adjustment if my warehouse is cheaper?
No — the online form compares your order against Costco.com pricing only. Because Costco has a generous return policy, some members instead return the online order and rebuy at the warehouse price; weigh the hassle before going that route.
I ordered through Costco Same-Day (Instacart). Which track am I on?
Neither, in practice. Same-day grocery delivery runs on Instacart with its own marked-up prices, and those orders are generally not eligible for Costco price adjustments.
Asking the wrong track is one of the three ways members lose refunds they had already earned — the other two are in 3 mistakes that cost you a Costco price adjustment. And if the warehouse price now ends in .97, that is a markdown with its own rules: what .97 means on a Costco price tag.
